As part of its efforts to prevent the use of digital currency and digital assets for criminal purposes, the United States Department of Justice is preparing to hire a new director for its digital currency enforcement unit.

The National Cryptocurrency Enforcement team was formed with the express purpose of enforcing digital currency laws, with a director seeking to lead a team of experienced prosecutors investigating and prosecuting cryptocurrency cases as a central part of a nationwide enforcement effort to combat the use of cryptocurrency as an illicit tool.

The position is currently advertised on the Federal government’s job site, USAJobs, with a salary ranging from $144,128 to $172,500 depending on experience. The successful applicant will be expected to work with US Attorney’s Offices and other law enforcement agencies to effectively enforce digital currency laws at the federal, state, and local levels.

The new director will also be expected to collaborate with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and other similar organizations to shape Bitcoin regulation in the country.

The new team, announced by US Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco, is made up of anti-money laundering and cybersecurity experts who will be in charge of enforcing AML and other laws governing digital currency transactions. The team will also be expected to detect fraudulent and other illegal activity in and around the digital asset space.

It comes amid a broader crackdown in the United States and elsewhere on illegal uses of digital currency and digital assets, at a time when regulators around the world are looking to increase pressure on criminals, scammers, and fraudsters who use digital currency to conceal illegal activities, as covered in CoinGeek’s Crypto Crime Cartel series.

According to the job description, the successful candidate will lead a team focused on supporting, investigating, and prosecuting cryptocurrency-related crimes and leading the Department’s efforts to reduce the use of cryptocurrency as a criminal tool.
