As the formal nationwide rollout of the digital yuan approaches, the People’s Bank of China (PBoC) is scaling up its experiment. The digital yuan wallet is now accessible on iOS and Android, but only in 11 locations. Those attending the Winter Olympics in Beijing will also use the wallet.

The wallet has been available for a few months to a small group of customers, but they had to be invited by the central bank before downloading it. However, several locals have taken to social media to claim that they could download the wallet now that it has been made available to anybody in the select 11 locations. Shanghai, Suzhou, Chengdu, Shenzhen, Xiong’an, Changsha, Hainan, Xi’an, Dalian, and Qingdao are among the cities. It’s also available in the places where the Beijing Winter Olympics will be held, including Beijing and Zhangjiakou, a nearby city.

The software is labeled a PBoC’s Digital Currency Institute product in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. The Digital Money Electronic Payment System is an extension of the central bank responsible for creating digital currency (DCEP).

The PBoC is putting its central bank digital currency to the ultimate mainstream test by including the Beijing Winter Olympics area among the locations with access to the digital yuan wallet. The Chinese government has already spent more than $4 billion on the event’s preparations. Even though certain nations, such as the United Kingdom and the United States, have announced a diplomatic boycott, China expects millions of people to attend. This massive crowd will ultimately test the digital yuan payment system’s resilience, efficiency, and speed.

It was previously reported that China was speeding up the construction of the digital yuan to debut it in time for the Beijing Winter Olympics. However, the digital yuan is unlikely to be ready for a complete rollout before the Olympics begin on February 4th.
