Bitcoin consumes more power than all these countries | World Economic Forum

As Bitcoin approaches new records, it is also consuming the energy of a nation of over 200 million people.

Cambridge University’s Cambridge Center for Alternative Finance is trying to track Bitcoin’s energy consumption. Although it is never known exactly, it is possible to make conjecture about this energy level by monitoring the total number of hashes generated by miners and reviewing the efficiency of Bitcoin mining equipment.

At 92.8 terawatt hours annually, Bitcoin’s electricity consumption was slightly higher than Pakistan’s in 2016 and not far from the Dutch consumption in that year.
